Do You Believe In Miracles?

Do you believe in miracles?

Regardless of how you choose to answer, if you’re reading these words, you’re witnessing a miracle right now.

Yes, it’s a miracle to be able to read, and it’s a miracle your phone or tablet or whatever has an Internet connection, but those are almost irrelevant.

What I’m talking about is you.

The
miracle
is
you.

The fact that you woke up this morning puts water-into-wine to shame.

Life is awesome.

And no, I’m not talking about the day to day life, filled with anxiety and war and greed.

Honestly, I hate those “life is great” mother fuckers. Go read the news for two minutes and then tell me how goddamn great life is. Tell that to the family whose son just got decapitated. The fact that the word “decapitated” has shown up in the news, even once, in the last century is proof enough that life is pretty far from great.

What I mean is this: life itself is awesome. The mysterious, luminous, animating force flowing through plants, animals and us.

And miraculously, as you slept last night, your body performed hundreds of trillions of functions which, unbeknownst to you, kept you alive. Kept you alive in spite of the fact that the fate of your eventual demise was sealed upon your birth.

The life inside of you insisted on remaining alive for yet another day. The vast universe is mostly composed of lifelessness but, here you are. Still. Reading these words which I’ve strung together in a very particular, but oftentimes serendipitous, order. It’s literally a miracle.

And here’s the thing about miracles – when you allow yourself to allow for miracles, you’ll notice more of them.
I promise.

This is the space I abide in (when I remember to do so) and I’ve seen the miraculous unfold time and time again.

Anxiety and war and greed aren’t proof that miracles don’t exist. It is, however, proof that we are choosing to squander this miracle. The miracle of life.

It’s time for us to choose differently. It’s time for us to believe differently.

And it starts with you.

Today.

While you still can.

Thank you.

Pawns and Padawans

My dad sat on the other side of this old chess board since he taught me how to play when I was a kid.

I got better as I got older and eventually, as Vader would say, the apprentice became the master.

He’d only beat me if I got cocky and moved a piece too hastily, or if he was able to get under my skin with a barrage of intentional annoyances to throw me off my game.

He’d either eat tuna fish loudly or ask me ridiculous questions or tap his fingers relentlessly.

God, I’d get so angry.

He’s been gone for awhile already, but I felt his absence stronger than ever when my nephews got home from sleepaway camp the other day. Maybe because it was the first barbecue I’ve been to
without him.

Although I’m a super strict vegetarian, I filled my gut with hotdogs, hamburgers and slices of steak. For him.

I feel him so overwhelmingly present right now. I felt him as soon as I found this old chess board in the back of my cabana today. And as soon as I saw the numbers he wrote next to the squares in order to teach my nephews how to play.

This table I’m writing on would be covered with every section of The New York Times. He’d get up to rummage through the fridge for blueberries or a piece of chicken and he’d always ask, “Do you want something cold to drink?”

I can still hear his voice as clearly as if I heard it yesterday.

Although I’m now typing with tears in my eyes, I am grateful to feel more grateful for these memories than sadness.

O Captain! My Captain!

I just walked passed a quarter mile of sand fleas lying dead along the shoreline.

I presume they weren’t smokers and I’m pretty sure they weren’t couch potatoes. But there they rested, regardless.

The universe, for unknowable reasons (or no reason at all), put contracts out on their lives and the high tide played the part of the hitman.

Sad, if you’re the sand flea’s loved ones, but seemingly a natural process and daily occurrence.

So, what does this say about death?

It happens. Sometimes, out of nowhere.

But the better question is: what does this say about life?

To me it says – don’t just exist, live.
Really live.

Consciously.

Lightheartedly.

And as Thoroeu said, confidentially.

It’s been carefully calculated that over one hundred billion people have already lived and subsequently died on this planet of ours.

And I got news for you kiddo, you’re going to be one of them.

I know it can be rough out there, but in the end, you’ll feel grateful to have drummed up the courage to give the finger to fear. You’ll be grateful to have cut your own path. You’ll be grateful to have lived with kindness in your heart.

If you were “successful” in your pursuits or not, in the eyes of the universe, you’ll be a success.

I promise.

Seize the day.

Live like a fruit fly.

And, R.I.P. Robin Williams. I sincerely hope you’ve been reunited with departed comics, relatives and dead poets.
