A Letter To The Olympic Games

Dear The O.G.,

I adore you.

I adore you because when you’re on TV, you graciously give me solid hours of simply loving my country.

During every other wakeful moment however, I’m forced to navigate through the negativity of greedy assholes who vote against necessities like healthcare and I find myself fantasizing about moving to a place like Bhutan (they measure their country’s strength by its GNH – Gross National Happiness).

But when I’m watching swimming, judo, volleyball etc, it’s USA all the way.

Olympic Games, please allow me to speak for you for a moment: United we stand, divided we fall.

Those six words can help bring peace to our planet, to our countries and into our homes.

With love and gratitude,
gabe

A Letter To The People Of The World

My Fellow Humans,

I’m watching the opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics.

Everyone is smiling. Everyone is full of hope. I can literally feel the emanating peace from 3,500 miles across the pond.

So let me ask you all this question: When are we going to stop killing each other?

Really, when are we?

I’ll pass the mic to the prophet Jimi Hendrix who once said, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”

With love and gratitude,

A Letter To The Movie “Yes Man”

Dear Yes Man,

I hope you realize you’re the most metaphysical movie made since the The Matrix (and I hope you also realize that I just won an alliteration contest with this sentience).

Of course there’s this line:

“Live your life, you won’t regret it.”

And this one:

“The world’s a playground. You know that when you are a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.”

But what hits me the hardest is the message laced throughout your one hour and forty-four minutes. It’s the message I constantly need to be reminded of. And here it is: everything is connected. Everything. So stay out of the Universe’s way.

But that leaves me with this question, “How does one stay out of the Universe’s way?”

If you were able to answer I think you’d say, “Follow your passions. They were given to you for a reason.”

With love and gratitude,
gabe

A Letter To The Metaphysics Of July 4th

Dear July 4th,

I love your metaphysical significance.

As a nation, we celebrate the day we declared independence rather than the day when we actually won it. We held truths to be self-evident on July 4, 1776 but the Treaty of Paris wasn’t signed with England until September 3, 1783.

It’s as if freedom was fulfilled by just putting it in writing and the war was a necessary evil to see it come to fruition. Huge life lesson here about the power of intention.

By the dawn’s early light,
gabe

A Letter To Those Who Mistake Kind For Weak

Dear Deer In Headlights,

Although I wish it never has to get to this point, it sometimes seems inevitable. As if opposing polarities in the universe have no choice but to collide in order to repel.

You push and I am kind. You push more and I become more kind. You continue to push, I take a deep breath, force a smile and maybe even apologize. And then, without knowing it at first, you begin to push for the last time.

I relish in that tender moment when your instincts instantly reveal a change in the balance of power. When you realize you’ve made the mistake of interpreting kindness for weakness. When you realize you won’t be able the conceal the fear in your eyes.

But then I let you off the hook. Again.

When will you learn that kindness means kindness? When will you learn not to judge a book by its cover?

I sincerely hope soon.

Wishing you well regardless,
gabe

A Letter To Michele Bachmann

(I wrote this for Alan.com back in August of 2011 – it’s worth revisiting)

Dear Michele,

According to the Federal Election Committee, President Obama raised $532,946,511 for the 2008 election. And in case you’re having problems with the commas, that’s 500 million and change. If by some chance you get the Republican nod, you’re going to have to come up with at least that.

But as every thinking person knows, you haven’t a prayer. Obama will school you in 2012. It’s equivalent to a match-up between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Hebrew school basketball team I played for when I was twelve.

Which brings me to my simple point: give the money to charity. Imagine the lives you’d impact if you instructed your supporters to donate hundreds of millions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital?

But every time you open your mouth, you continue to confirm that you only care about one person. And no, that person isn’t Jesus.

Please do the right thing,

Gabe Berman

P.S. “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god.”
